Terms of Use

These terms apply to the TypeScreen app for iPad and to TypeScreen on your handheld, which the app installs. By tapping Install on Handheld or Check in the app, you agree to them.

The Main Points

  • To install TypeScreen, your handheld needs Developer Mode, and pairing with iPad turns on SSH. Both stay on after installation and after you remove TypeScreen, until you turn them off.
  • iPad keeps a key that can run commands on your handheld. That’s how it installs and updates TypeScreen.
  • You use TypeScreen at your own risk. It’s provided as is, without warranties, to the extent the law allows.
  • You can remove TypeScreen from your handheld at any time: in the app, open Help and tap Remove TypeScreen from Handheld.

Who We Are

TypeScreen is made by its developer, named on the app’s App Store page (“we”, “us”). For questions and complaints, write to support@typescreen.app.

TypeScreen and Apple’s Terms

If you got TypeScreen from the App Store, Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to the app. These terms add to it and don’t replace it. Apple isn’t a party to these terms and isn’t responsible for TypeScreen or its support.

What TypeScreen Does

The iPad app shows the screen of a SteamOS handheld on iPad. Video travels over a USB cable from TypeScreen on your handheld. The app installs and updates TypeScreen on your handheld over Wi‑Fi.

What Changes on Your Handheld

  • Developer Mode. You turn it on in Steam settings. Installation isn’t possible without it.
  • SSH. Pairing with iPad (“Pair new host”) turns on the SSH service on your handheld. It stays on, including after SteamOS updates, until you turn it off. While SSH is on, anyone on the same network who knows your handheld’s password can sign in to it.
  • iPad’s key. Your handheld keeps the public part of the iPad’s key in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys. The key can run commands as the deck user, but it can’t open a terminal session or forward network connections. The private part stays in the iPad keychain.
  • TypeScreen files. Podman containers and systemd user services in the deck user’s home folder. The first installation downloads about 1 GB. The SteamOS system partition isn’t changed.

How to Remove Everything

  1. In the iPad app, open Help and tap Remove TypeScreen from Handheld. This removes TypeScreen’s services, images, settings, and pairing records, along with the iPad’s key.
  2. Turn off SSH: see How to Turn Off SSH.
  3. If you don’t need Developer Mode for anything else, turn it off on your handheld in Settings → System.

Your Responsibilities

  • Install TypeScreen only on a handheld that’s yours or with its owner’s permission.
  • Keep your handheld’s password and your Wi‑Fi network secure. If the deck user has a password, make it a strong one.
  • If you lose your iPad, delete its key on your handheld: the lines that end in TypeScreen in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys.
  • Back up data that matters to you, and keep free space on your handheld.
  • If you’re under the age of majority where you live, use TypeScreen with a parent’s or guardian’s permission.

No Warranty

To the extent the law allows, TypeScreen is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind. We don’t promise that it will work with every handheld, with future versions of SteamOS and Steam, or without interruptions. TypeScreen isn’t affiliated with Valve, ASUS, or Lenovo. We can’t promise that Developer Mode and TypeScreen won’t affect your handheld’s warranty — check the manufacturer’s terms.

Limitation of Liability

To the extent the law allows, we aren’t liable for damage to your handheld, iPad, or other devices, for indirect or consequential damages, for loss of data, or for loss of access to accounts, funds, or items in Steam or other services.

Security

To report a security issue, write to support@typescreen.app.

Privacy

What the app stores and sends is described in the Privacy Policy. Analytics are sent only if you allow them, and that choice is separate from these terms.

Open-Source Software

The app includes open-source software. Its components and licenses are listed on the Open-Source Licenses page.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms, for example when TypeScreen changes. The current version and its date are on this page. If the changes are significant, we’ll let you know in the app or on this website. If you don’t agree to the new terms, stop using TypeScreen and remove it from your handheld.

Stopping Use

You can stop using TypeScreen at any time: remove it from your handheld (see above) and delete the app from iPad. We may stop developing or supporting TypeScreen.

Questions and Disputes

If something goes wrong, write to support@typescreen.app first — most problems can be solved quickly.
